The Scary Truth about Chemicals Lurking in your Skin Care

Posted on

Did you know that on a daily basis a typical woman uses personal care products that contain more than 160 different questionable chemicals that potentially can penetrate her skin? For men the number is a little better, but still shocking at approximately half of that.*

Given that the skin is the largest organ of the body, this is cause for serious concern. What's more, we now know that what we apply to our skin can be absorbed into our bodies. Just consider the number of pharmaceuticals available today in the form of creams and patches, and it is clear that the skin is an effective means of entry to our bodies.

Upon application, these toxic chemicals can trigger skin allergies, cause inflammation and spark sensitive skin reactions. This, in turn, causes physical and emotional distress that can be damaging not only to our wellbeing but also to our self esteem. We want to change all of that so we put together some important tips and a SPECIAL OFFER for you below.

Once in the bloodstream, these toxic chemicals can cause further destruction to one’s health negatively affecting our immune system, hormonal health and risk for cancer.  We want to let you know that there are alternatives that work just as well, if not better, and won't put your health at risk. Be forewarned though, once you go natural it's very difficult to go back.  It's a little like comparing lemon juice in a bottle to fresh squeezed.  There really is no comparison!

So why do so many products still exist that contain toxic ingredients? Firstly, it’s important to note that none of the ingredients we’ve noted below are banned so manufacturers are permitted to use them at their own discretion. These questionable ingredients are used for a variety of reasons some of which include:

  • Cost (typically inexpensive)

  • To preserve product (almost indefinitely)

  • Providing a silky feel (that everyone wants)

  • To ensure stability (so the product doesn’t degrade)

  • As an antibacterial agent (to "protect" your immune system)

  • Increasing bubbles (because we’ve been led to believe that more is always better)

As much 60% of what we apply to our skin is absorbed into our bodies. It is critical that we educate ourselves so that we know what ingredients are in the personal care products that we use every single day of our lives. This can be overwhelming at first, however, in time, recognizing questionable ingredients will become second nature. To get started, we’ve provided a list of the most prevalent to look out for:

  • Propylene Glycol

  • Parabens (Ethyl, Methyl, Propyl)

  • PEGs (Polyethylene Glycol)

  • Phthalates

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

  • Triclosan

Keep this list handy until you are familiar with these top "dirty" ingredients.

We are so passionate about this topic, so, as promised, we’ve put together a SPECIAL OFFER for you.
